Designed for Sensitive Skin

Our Research First Approach

At Skinakin, every garment begins with a clear question:

How can clothing better support children who experience sensitive or eczema-prone skin, particularly during sleep?

Our design approach is informed by established research into skin sensitivity, textile behaviour, and garment construction, alongside professional insight and the lived experience of families.

We recognise that disrupted sleep and discomfort are common challenges for children with eczema. Everyday environmental factors, including clothing, can influence skin comfort, particularly overnight.

Design Guided by Evidence

Our product development follows structured design principles grounded in widely accepted understanding of sensitive skin needs.

This includes careful consideration of:

- Fabric breathability and thermal regulation

- Seam placement to minimise friction

- Labelling choices to reduce irritation

- Fit and movement during sleep

Rather than designing standard nightwear, we focus on garments that are purpose-built to support comfort as part of a child’s normal routine.

Development, Testing, and Recognition

Skinakin’s development has been supported through independent innovation funding and structured research processes.

In 2021, Skinakin received support from Innovate UK. This enabled exploration of materials, garment construction, fit, and performance considerations in greater depth.

Our design process included multiple structured wearer feedback phases. Families tested garments over extended periods, providing qualitative insight into comfort, movement, durability, and real-world usability.

Design refinements were made iteratively, based on this lived experience.

This combination of research-informed principles and practical feedback continues to guide our approach.

Designed with Families in Mind

Throughout development, we prioritise listening to parents and children who live with sensitive skin every day.

Their insights shape:

• How garments feel against the skin
• How they move during sleep
• How they integrate into daily routines

Skinakin is designed with care, informed by research, and developed to be evidence led, and practical for families managing sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

Our Design Principles

• Developed through structured research and iterative wearer feedback
• Soft, breathable materials selected with sensitive skin in mind
• Thoughtful construction to reduce unnecessary friction

Founder Insight

Skinakin was created following first-hand frustration with the limited solutions available for managing night-time scratching in children with eczema.

Experiencing the gap between medical advice and practical overnight support informed our focus on sleep environments, garment construction, and friction reduction.

That lived insight continues to shape how we approach research, design, and refinement.
